Strangling the Schools
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/conte...
FORTY-NINE schools in Prince George’s County
were recently recognized by the state as making
significant academic progress. That’s 44
percent better than the previous year’s
record and is in keeping with other measures
showing a steady uptick in student achievement.
Reforms undertaken by Superintendent John E. Deasy
are clearly working, so it’s a pity that
this progress is threatened by the county running
short of cash. Mar 23, 2008

Summit’s Success Is Bittersweet For Schools
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/conte...
The Prince George’s County Board was left
holding a $75,000 bill for the Dual Language
Parent Summit, an October event that drew more
than 1,000 people. Board member Rosalind Johnson
(District 1), who had organized the event for
months, said most of the costs were supposed to be
covered by donations the board had secured
informally. But only $2,700 in donations
materialized, far short of the event’s
$78,274.74 cost. March 20, 2008
