Earthquake on Land, Trinidad, December 21 2008

From: Seismic Research Centre, The University of the West Indies, St. Augustine, Trinidad & Tobago. On Sunday 21st December an earthquake occurred near east Trinidad at 8:55am local time. The revised location for the event is 10.77°N 61.46°W. The revised magnitude is 4.3 and the focal depth was 40km. The earthquake was reported as felt in Westmoorings, Cocorite, Port of Spain, St. Augustine, Arouca, Arima, Chaguanas, San Fernando and Princes Town in Trinidad. This earthquake occurred within the same general area as the 2006 earthquake sequence.

Degraded grasslands better option for biofuels

Producing biofuels from oil palm plantations established on degraded grasslands rather than tropical rainforests and peat lands would result in a net removal of carbon from the atmosphere rather than greenhouse gas emissions, report researchers writing in Conservation Biology. The results confirm that benefits to climate from biofuel production depend greatly on the type of land used for feedstocks.

Geothermal Energy Potential in Volcanic Caribbean Region

The Lesser Antilles Island arc extends 850 km along the eastern edge of the Caribbean Plate. The islands have been largely built by volcanism above a subduction zone, as the Atlantic Plate is being subducted under the Caribbean Plate. There are at least 19 potentially “active” volcanoes in the Lesser Antilles. The thermal energy of these volcanic islands makes them of interest for geothermal exploration.
