One approach to developing intelligent machines is by brute force, let's call this the BF approach. It starts with breaking down intelligence into a large set of different, very specific aspects, that humans exhibit to varying degrees. Now we're all familiar with these aspects. Some examples are visualization, sequential thought, pattern recognition, memory, imagination, logic, etc. Just think of anything you do that requires a bit of creativity. The BF approach involves going into great detail, making an attempt to quantify all the important aspects of intelligence.
