Microsoft: Vista feature designed to 'annoy users' | Tech News on ZDNet David Cross, a product unit manager at Microsoft, was the group program manager in charge of designing User Account Control (UAC), which, when activated, requires people to run Vista in standard user mode rather than having administrator privileges, and offers a prompt if they try to install a program. "The reason we put UAC into the (Vista) platform was to annoy users--I'm serious," said Cross, speaking at the RSA Conference here Thursday. "Most users had administrator privileges on previous Windows systems and most applications needed administrator privileges to install or run."

Open Sensemaking Communities (OSC) is a concept we are using to investigate the next step after publishing Open Educational Resources, namely, designing for sensemaking: embedding OERs in an environment that supports end-users (both students and educators) in connecting, engaging more deeply, with the material and with each other in self-organising communities of interest.

SCOAP3 The Open Access (OA) tenets of granting unrestricted access to the results of publicly-funded research are in contrast with current models of scientific publishing, where access is restricted to journal customers. At the same time, subscription costs increase and add considerable strain on libraries, forced to cancel an increasing number of journals subscriptions. This situation is particularly acute in fields like High-Energy Physics (HEP), where pre-prints describing scientific results are timely available online. There is a growing concern within the academic community that the future of high-quality journals, and the peer-review system they administer, is at risk.

BioMed Central Blog : Harvard Faculty of Arts and Sciences votes to adopt mandatory open access policy; "As discussed in the New York Times and the Harvard Crimson, Harvard's Faculty of Arts and Sciences has just considered, and approved, the adoption of a new policy designed to ensure that the results of work published by members of the Faculty remain openly accessible. The policy is the first of its kind in the US, though similar institutional open access mandates are becoming increasingly common around the world."
Introduction to Distributed System Design Why build a distributed system? There are lots of advantages including the ability to connect remote users with remote resources in an open and scalable way. When we say open, we mean each component is continually open to interaction with other components. When we say scalable, we mean the system can easily be altered to accommodate changes in the number of users, resources and computing entities. Thus, a distributed system can be much larger and more powerful given the combined capabilities of the distributed components, than combinations of stand-alone systems. But it's not easy - for a distributed system to be useful, it must be reliable. This is a difficult goal to achieve because of the complexity of the interactions between simultaneously running components.

Endocannabinoid System Network (ECSN) - ECS Overview; The ECS is a complex endogenous signaling system that influences multiple metabolic pathways.3 It is comprised of transmembrane endocannabinoid receptors (the cannabinoid [CB] receptors), their endogenous ligands (the endocannabinoids), the proteins involved in endocannabinoid synthesis and inactivation, as well as the intracellular signaling pathways affected by endocannabinoids.4 Endocannabinoid receptors are highly expressed in the brain, and have been also found in organs and tissues of the body involved in energy homeostasis, such as adipose tissue, liver, gastrointestinal tract, and skeletal muscle.

A social entrepreneur identifies and solves social problems on a large scale. Just as business entrepreneurs create and transform whole industries, social entrepreneurs act as the change agents for society, seizing opportunities others miss in order to improve systems, invent and disseminate new approaches and advance sustainable solutions that create social value. Unlike traditional business entrepreneurs, social entrepreneurs primarily seek to generate “social value” rather than profits. And unlike the majority of non-profit organizations, their work is targeted not only towards immediate, small-scale effects, but sweeping, long-term change.

Cosmic Variance is a group blog by people who, coincidentally or not, all happen to be physicists and astrophysicists: Mark Trodden, Risa Wechsler, Sean Carroll, JoAnne Hewett, Julianne Dalcanton, John Conway, and Daniel Holz. Our day (and night) jobs notwithstanding, the blog is about whatever we find interesting — science, to be sure, but also arts, politics, culture, technology, academia, and miscellaneous trivia. We have similar outlooks on many things, widely disparate opinions about others, and will do our best to keep the discourse reasonably elevated. A blogroll and some physics-related links can be found on our links page, as well as in pull-down menus on the sidebar at right. We have included a long, although by no means complete, listing of physics/astrophysics-oriented blogs; if you know of any such sites (including your own) falling into this category that we have missed, please let us know. We do not promise to list every blog, but we hope to be fairly inclusive. Our former co-blogger Clifford Johnson has now gone on to blog at asymptotia.com. Various guest bloggers join the fun from time to time.

Misreading the mind - Los Angeles Times; Our sensations have been reduced to a set of specific circuits. The mind has been imaged as it thinks about itself, with every thought traced back to its cortical source. The most ineffable of emotions have been translated into the terms of chemistry, so that the feeling of love is just a little too much dopamine. Fear is an excited amygdala. Even our sense of consciousness is explained away with references to some obscure property of the frontal cortex. It turns out that there is nothing inherently mysterious about those 3 pounds of wrinkled flesh inside the skull. There is no ghost in the machine.
