I’ve never, ever known what I’ve wanted to do with my life. I’ve thought about being any number of things, and done lotsof courses. From Geography to Animation and Design, from College to Higher Education. But I’ve never genuinely known. I’d love to write a book, but incomplete, half-written down ideas don’t pay the mortgage!

Now until summer of 09 if you’d mentioned Search Engine Optimization to me, you would have received a gormless stare in return. Search Engine Placement, while that made sense to me, wasn’t something I’d ever really given any real thought too, in spite of the fact I use Google on a frequent basis (who doesn’t these days). I only thought that Google just singled out whatever it felt closely matched what you’d typed in, and that was the end. I honestly didn’t think it was something you could have any real power over, something that would be an important part in an Online Marketing strategy or anything. So how I found out about the Search Engine Optimisation Company was quite by chance!

I’d ended up working in a call centre; something I’d always said I’d never do. Tempted by the modest wages, and the fact that it was technical support, something I had an interest in. I knew by applying for that job I’d be able to move out and start being independent and all that jazz. Which I did, and that was good, but the job itself quickly began to wear me down. Putting the headset on was like chaining yourself to thedesk. Not much fun. However, I had managed to pretty much trap myself by collecting debts sufficient enough to mean I couldn’t really afford to take a lower paid job. So it began, every day, searching websites and newspapers, hunting for something else to do with my life. All the while getting more depressed, as my weekends were obliterated one by one in a wave of 2:30pm till 11pm shifts.

I’d been at this for about a month or so, and it was another afternoon, and I was again searching the job center website, looking at the same jobs that I was reasonably sure had been showing up for the past month... when all of a sudden one of them caught my eye. WEB OPTIMIZATION CONSULTANT. Not sure what that was, but I sent for information anyway. It might be worthwhile, and that’s a very respectable OTE of £40k per annum!

I was quite surprised when I got a pretty prompt reply back. I got more information, and this is where everything started to fall into place for me. Working for a Search Engine Optimization Company, I’d be helping websites achieve a superior Search Engine Placement, getting them to page one of Google. I was stunned when I found out the numbers involved, just two percent of people go to page 2? When I considered it though, I never do it myself. Makes sense that it would be a chief part of online marketing really. As I got the gist of it, I really got involved with the idea. Being an SEO will mean I’ll become a chief part of a company’s Online Marketing strategy, and I’ll be helping them accomplish good search engine placement ethically, without throwing their money down the drain. I’ve still a way to go, I’m still in training with the Search Engine Optimization Company, but for once, I feel like I’m heading for something I actually want to do with my life.
