Rheumatoid arthritis appears to be on the rise among U.S. women after four decades of retreat. The condition is an inflammatory type of arthritis that leads to joint pain, swelling, stiffness and joint damage. The rate of new cases of rheumatoid arthritis in the United States declined from 1955 through 1994. But from 1995 through 2004, the rate was 54 new cases annually per 100,000 women, up from 36 per 100,000 during the decade previous. About 1 percent of people in the United States have rheumatoid arthritis.

Ever since operating room nurse Pauline Taylor got sick after getting a shot a few years ago, she's sworn off the vaccine. "I rarely get sick. The only thing I could narrow it down to is that I had gotten this shot," said Taylor. In fact, nearly 60 percent of health care workers fail to get a flu shot, despite recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention that all health care workers get vaccinated. However, there are still very few well documented cases of flu outbreaks caused by health care workers. Health care workers opt not to get vaccinated for the same reasons others are hesitant, including a fear of catching the flu from the vaccine itself.

Heart attacks occur earlier in people who are overweight or obese, and obesity has overtaken smoking as the leading cause of premature heart attacks. Dr. Peter A. McCullough, whose research determined this, said that, "Since two thirds of Americans have excess body fat we expect an explosion in the rates of heart attacks among women in their 40âs and 50âs." McCullough and his colleagues examined the records of more than 111,000 patients who suffered a heart attack. They found that the average age at first heart attack was 74.6 years in the leanest patients and 58.7 years in the most obese.

A foundation populated by the giants of business, banking, government and military wants to âvetâ websites and limit the spread of information that it says creates âconspiracy theoriesâ. The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) says it is worried about the way the web has been âused to spread disinformationâ. They want to introduce a new system that would give websites a label for trustworthiness or unreliability. One âdamaging conspiracy theoryâ they want to shut down is the notion that MMR vaccines are harmful. Of course, this âconspiracy theoryâ stems not from paranoid forum postings and misquoted blog entries, but from scientific research into the mercury based preservative thimerosal. Thimerosal was developed by Eli Lilly, and Merck is the worldâs largest supplier of the MMR triple jab -- and it is little wonder W3C considers such information to be âdamagingâ given that Eli Lilly and Merck are both paid up and approved members of the Consortium! If anyone should be labeled with an âunreliableâ rating, it is the WC3.

A study in the Journal of the American Medical Association surveyed incoming interns at three training sites, anonymously evaluating these young doctors' participation in, and attitudes toward, unprofessional behaviors. The researchers found that up to 79 percent of doctors-in-training report at least one unprofessional behavior -- for example, having nonclinical, personal conversations in patient care areas, making fun of other doctors, wearing inappropriate clothing. Whatâs worse is that 17 percent of these interns reported making fun of patients when the patients were under anesthesia or not present. Those that participated in this specific behavior were the least likely to think that it was unethical. Research bears out that medical students enter medical school with compassion, a desire to be supportive and to be the patient's advocate. But sometime during the third year of medical school, the same research uncovers a shift in attitudes among students. Cynicism creeps in. The patient becomes de-personalized. Harm to patients is not always physical. It can be emotional as well. Patients can be abused by physicians who are cold, uncaring or cavalier. They can be abused when the physician, directly or indirectly, disparages them, making them feel embarrassed, even angry.

Children who regularly exercise and limit their TV time are much less likely to be overweight than their peers, according to a new study. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that children devote no more than two hours each day to TV and video games. Experts also encourage children to exercise regularly. One common recommendation is for children and teenagers to get at least one hour of moderate exercise on most or all days of the week. For the new study, researchers looked at whether there were weight differences between children who met or did not meet recommendations for "screen time" and exercise. They found that, in a group of more than 700 children, those who did not meet either recommendation were three to four times more likely to be overweight.

Scientists are still trying to unravel the many mysteries of the brain. But although there is still a lot to learn, several studies have indicated a few ways to help keep your thinking organ in shape, now and as you age.1. Eat Your Brain FoodA diet of junk food can also junk up your brain. Fake âfoodsâ like trans fats can negatively affect the brain's synapses. But a balanced diet rich in omega-3 fatty acids can give the synapses a boost and help fight against mental disorders from depression to dementia.2. Hit the GymSince exercise is a mild stressor to your body, eating up the energy needed by your brain, it triggers the release of chemicals called growth factors that make the brain's neurons stronger and healthier. Half an hour every other day will do it, according to experts.3. Mind BendersGive your brain a workout, too, with brainteasers, crossword puzzles and memory games. Studies have shown that using these tools to stay mentally active can reduce the risks of developing dementia by building and maintaining a reserve of stimulation in your brain. 4. Memory TricksKeeping information stored in your memory banks and retaining that memory with age may also be a simple matter of mind control. Confidence in your cognitive abilities could actually affect how well your memory functions, particularly for the elderly. 5. Give it a RestSleep gives your brain a chance to replay the memories of the day and consolidate them for long-term storage. One study suggested that the brain can do its reviewing much faster when you're asleep than when you're wide awake.

Questions have emerged over whether long-term use of bone-building drugs for osteoporosis may actually lead to weaker bones in some people. The concern rises from a series of case reports showing a rare type of leg fracture that shears straight across the upper thighbone, often after little or no trauma. People who have used bone-building drugs called bisphosphonates for five years or more have reported that after weeks or months of unexplained aching, their thighbones simply snapped while they were walking or standing. A recent study reported on 20 patients with the fracture. Nineteen had been using the bone drug Fosamax for an average of 6.9 years. Last year, another report tracked 13 women with low-trauma fractures, including 9 who had been on long-term Fosamax therapy.
