Quoted:When the Ganga River is threatened, Indians will have to wake up the government to this crisis."
Quoted: "To summarize: of the three paths, the electron economy has the most potential and the liabilities are the easiest to mitigate. Biofuels can serve as a bridging factor that help us achieve energy independence, but when DCFCs become practical the majority of biofuel feedstocks should be shifted to carbon production. Part II will discuss improvements at the other end of the plant-to-wheels energy chain - innovations in battery technology."

All my piano musings have a by-nc-sa license applied to them. That means that you can, without having to contact me and ask, download the pieces, and share them provided my name stays attached. You can also adapt them into your own works provided you apply a similar noncommercial license to the resultant work, and again give me attribution. All my songs have a by-nc-nd license. That means that you can, without contacting me to ask, download and share my songs provided you keep my name attached. nd stands for "No Derivatives", meaning you can't adapt them into your own works. So it's a slightly more restrictive license. You can of course feel free to contact me for more permissions on any of them, though. Some of the art musings have already had extra permissions granted to them (even though they are connected to my tunes, I let the artist have commercial purposes for the resultant art). Just contact me, I love to collaborate.
The immense outpouring of wonder and affection which greeted these recordings suggests that the act of listening exceeded scientific enquiry. Hearing whale song was understood as a journey of discovery equivalent to the exploration of outer or inner space. It was an encounter with nothing less than a new order of sentience. Payne’s research, like John C. Lily’s work with dolphin communication and Dian Fossey’s with gorillas, seemed to have discovered a new form of language and liberated a dormant artistic potential. In interviews, Payne spoke of night-time recording sessions in the North Atlantic, ‘taking turns at the headphones in the cockpit, lulled by the smooth rolling of the boat’ and began to refer to the whale moans as the work of ‘great singer-composer-poets’. It is unclear whether Payne or the mutton-chopped hipsters over at Columbia Records gave his recordings titles such as ‘Slowed Down Solo Whale’ and ‘Three Whale Trip’ but the sense that this was science in the service of the sublime remains surprisingly powerful.

This work grew out of observation that fungi were growing on the walls of Chernobyl reactor and in the ground nearby and all were blackened with melanin. In some areas the ground itsself is turning black with the melanized fungi. Melanin expression is a protective response, it is highly stable and does not readily degrade even in boiling acid. Melanin is utilized by plant pathogens, free living fungi, and pathogenic fungi for a variety of purposes that mainly is thought to be absorbing free radicals and reactive oxygen species to protect the organism from damage.

For more than a decade, the fear that the Himalayan glaciers may be melting have attracted the attention of geologists and policymakers. During this time, conferences and papers have been written about the topic and media coverage has also increased on this issue. And finally, here comes the most comprehensive study on the topic-- Impact of Climate Change on Himalayan Glaciers and Glacial Lakes: Case Studies on GLOF and Associated Hazards in Nepal and Bhutan. This 119-page scientific study focuses on the impact of warming temperatures on glaciers and glacial lakes in the Himalayan region. It warns of impending glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs) – when rising waters from glacial melt breach dams in glacial lakes – and calls for early warning and mitigation measures to avert disaster. The document, released on June 5 in Kathmandu and Bangkok on the World Environment Day, is jointly produced by the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and authored by B. Shrestha, P. Mool and S.R. Bajracharaya.
Early modern Shanghai architectures and over 1,000-year-old Xumishan Grottoes in northern China were listed by the World Monuments Fund (WMF) on the 100 most endangered architectural and cultural sites in the world on Wednesday. The watch list, announced every two years by the non-profit organization based in New York City, highlights this year three critical man-made threats: political conflict, unchecked urban and industrial development, and global climate change. WMF said some of the most prominent early modern structures in Shanghai have been recognized as landmarks and the threats to the buildings from the 1920s, 1930s, and 1940s persist due to lack of awareness and development pressures. Shanghai, China's primary economic hub, is once again experiencing a period of remarkable growth. The work of the early Chinese architects is significant historically and architecturally but lacks long-term safeguarding, WMF said. As for Xumishan, a Buddhist enclave with more than 130 grottoes, the main threats are exposure to the elements, vandalism and limited resources to protect the cultural site. The grottoes were adorned with statues, wall paintings, and inscribed stelae during a 600-year period between the fourth and tenth centuries A.D. Although the Xumishan Grottoes have been designated a National Level Cultural Relic Protected Site in China, they face imminent danger due to natural causes, including wind and sand erosion, water damage, and earthquakes. Previous emergency conservation measures, including reconstruction of some elements in concrete, also need to be reconsidered and possibly reversed.

Welcome to NEWSgrist NEWSgrist was started in March 2000 as an e-zine devoted to the politics of art and culture in the digital age. For four years it was distributed entirely by email subscription. In April 2004 it morphed into a blog. Newsgrist remains dedicated to bridging gaps between the digital and the non-technical, art and activism, the diverse blog and non-blog worlds of readers and subscribers.
A complex interplay of tectonic, eustatic and oceanographic processes concurred in the development of ‘drowning unconformities’ at the top of the Giumal clastic shelf. Rapid deepening and waning of both volcanic and quartzo-feldspathic terrigenous detritus are mainly ascribed to the global mid-Cretaceous sea-level rise and to rapid thermo-tectonic subsidence at the end of the short-lived Albian magmatic event, possibly related to a mantle plume rising beneath northern India. Intensification of the east-bound oceanic current off the north margin of India after the final break-up of Gondwanaland was responsible for continuous resuspension and minimal accumulation rates around the shelf-break. The associated coastal upwelling favoured impingement of the oxygen-minimum zone on the outer shelf, with glauco-phosphorite deposition coinciding in time with peak global transgressions and ‘anoxic events’ in the world oceans.
This solar cell has incorporated three proprietary technologies in an effort to increase efficiency. Firstly, reflectivity from the acceptance surface has been reduced through RIE (reactive ion etching) microfabrication using a nano-sized mask material. This resulted in the increased amount of absorbed light.
Scientists believe that the human illness, Variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease (vCJD) - recognised in 1996 - is caused by the consumption of BSE-infected meat. About 160 people are thought to have died of the condition worldwide.
When I first heard about this in passing I didn't think much of it. I didn't realize that there is video. This is the incident you may have heard of where a small boy climbed under the ropes in a Kansas train station and danced all over a Buddhist sand mandala that they had been working on for days. The video shows the entire event, and I have to admit that I did look at the progress bar to see when it would mercifully be over.
Marden has always found ways to reinvent his painting to make it more relevant to himself. He has never allowed himself to repeat the same ideas over and over like other successful artists. He has always pushed the boundaries of himself and his medium to make it more relevant to his current interests and to the way he sees the world. Nobody who pushes that hard can always make perfect paintings, but the key is to keep changing and evolving. But when I was walking through the retrospective, it was like some of his earliest work is more relevant to the interaction between the artists, the paintings and the audience than his later work, when really it should be the other way around. All of the artists that Marden admires either died young or got better as they got older. We still need great painters, perhaps now more than ever, and we want to be challenged in the way that great paintings have always made us feel more alive and connected to world around us.
