These pictures show the devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina on August 29, 2005. I have focused on our street, because that is the only area we can get to. The entire area South of the tracks is controlled access to residents only.<br /> <br /> Somehow, our house and property survived almost completely intact. We lost only a few shingles and the screened enclosure to our pool. There was no water damage to the house itself. Others were not so lucky. More than half of the homes on our street were just washed away and lost. Two people who stayed on our street in their home lost their lives.<br /> <br /> It is now two weeks after the storm and life is slowly returning to normal. We have power but no other utilities. The Coast will not be the same in our lifetime. Anything residential within 500-1000 feet from the beach, from Waveland to Biloxi, is just gone. All commercial property along the beach was severely damaged or destroyed. The destruction is beyond comprehension.<br /> <br /> We cannot begin to understand why we were spared and so many others weren`t. There are so many people that lost everything, so I ask that you make a contribution to the American Red Cross or the Salvation Army. Any little bit will help some family make it though another day with a little hope for the future.
