Visualization is serious tool, but I have a serious gripe on how it gets positioned in BI projects. As a result, a lot of executives get an impression that it is not useful, and that it is nothing more than a pretty marketing picture. In future, I also expect BI tools to be able to suggest intelligent visual representations of the data with an ability to switch to different visuals, and the ability to drill down as needed.
A while ago, I compared the Eclipse Development Process (EDP) to that of the Rational Unified Processs. The EDP specifically addresses the steps that a eclipse project goes through to be released. It addresses a little bit on management, and touches only briefly on technical practices of actual development. I've been told that the Eclipse Foundation feels that how the code is developed is best left up to the individual projects. In general, I'm okay with that, as not every team works best the same way. However, for those teams that want to be more agile in their development, and incorporate some more technical practices what can be done?

Adobe is teaming up with search industry leaders to dramatically improve search results of dynamic web content and rich Internet applications (RIAs). Adobe is providing optimized Adobe Flash Player technology to Google and Yahoo! to enhance search engine indexing of the Flash file format (SWF) and uncover information that is currently undiscoverable by search engines. This will provide more relevant automatic search rankings of the millions of RIAs and other dynamic content that run in Adobe Flash Player. Moving forward, RIA developers and rich web content producers won't need to amend existing and future content to make it searchable—they can now be confident that it can be found by users around the globe.
While Adobe Flash has remained popular with Web developers who want to deliver fluid user interfaces, database-driven content, and nonstandard typography on the Web, it has suffered from one glaring shortcoming: search engines have been unable to effectively index the content held within the Flash file. With Ichabod, Adobe is hoping to fix that problem for Flash. Update: According to a comment from Adobe's John Dowdell, Ichabod only works on Flash, not AJAX as previously reported. So, what then is XMLA? XML for Analysis is a standard that allows client applications to talk to multi-dimensional or OLAP data sources. The communication of messages back and forth is done using web standards – HTTP, SOAP, and XML. The query language used is MDX, which is the most commonly used multi-dimensional expression language today. Oracle’s Essbase, Microsoft’s Analysis Services, and SAP’s NetWeaver all support the MDX language and the XMLA specification [doc].
It would appear that BAM is about real-time event monitoring. It targets the status and results of business operations, processes and transactions from data surfaced from automated processes.

Today’s mashup applications can be described using a simple interaction model that supports search, review, collaborate, and update behaviors. Mashups can be used for business scenarios, providing support for common interactions where a user takes an action and the mashup application provides one or more responses. The user roles and data for each industry where mashups are used today are different and provide unique value to address the industry’s business requirements. The usage patterns are similar, though, because the underlining IT requirements are basically the same. This article touches a small set of possibilities afforded by mashup technology based on the use of early adopters. Line of Business implementations not only experience growth, but greater success. According to this year's McKinsey survey on Building the Web 2.0 Enterprise, IT-driven implementations had 60% user dissatisfaction, whereas LoB-driven had 74% satisfaction. Part of this is vendor selection, but LoB implementations have greater engagement and adoption. I believe the best approach is to partner LoB with IT, what I once called middlespace, for the benefits of top down and bottom up adoption.
However, for business-driven internal enterprise Web 2.0 collaboration projects, I see growth. Why? Because the business will find their collaboration needs to grow in 2009, while they see IT providing them with fewer services. Collaboration needs grow as a result of layoffs, mergers, and deepening external partnerships (requiring new infrastructure to collaborate outside the firewall with trusted, external partners). And this happens while IT’s services shrink as a result of layoffs, a focus on streamlining operational costs, while not taking on new projects

Today's leading businesses rely on a mix of distributed technologies and new functionality, such as service-oriented architecture (SOA). Virtualization can improve the quality and time-to-market for these systems. But how can teams virtualize to improve the quality and time-to-market of SOA functionality that does not necessarily reside under a centralized team's control? The extended organization must connect these two strategies by virtualizing the shared behaviors of services, thereby multiplying the value of SOA.
What’s interesting [now] is that there is an emergent new model, and you all are here because you are part of that new model. I don’t think people have really understood how big this opportunity really is. It starts with the premise that the data services and architecture should be on servers. We call it cloud computing – they should be in a “cloud” somewhere. And that if you have the right kind of browser or the right kind of access, it doesn’t matter whether you have a PC or a Mac or a mobile phone or a BlackBerry or what have you – or new devices still to be developed – you can get access to the cloud. There are a number of companies that have benefited from that. Obviously, Google, Yahoo!, eBay, Amazon come to mind. The computation and the data and so forth are in the servers.

One thing is now clear in this burgeoning new industry; that there is genuine interest in being a leading provider of enterprise mashup tools as organizations begin getting serious about applying them to make the development of Web-based business solutions faster, more commonplace, and less costly. One significant open question continues to be how long it will take for rapidly evolving mashup techniques to move into enterprises, which have been falling behind developments on the fast-pace of the consumer Web for a number of years now and are just now beginning to make inroads into some businesses.
As a case in point, take Xactly’s 5-way mashup, announced Monday (image courtesy of Xactly). Using Salesforce.com’s Force.com platform as the foundation, the SaaS vendor has mashed up its own sales compensation application with Amazon.com’s retail catalog, the Paypal payment system and an iGoogle gadget. The mashup creates an enterprise-class incentive rewards management and fulfilment application that at the same time is economical enough to be affordable for smaller businesses — subscriptions will be $10 per user per month, at the end of a 90-day free-of-charge launch window that ends December 1st.

An SOA COE is an organization that assimilates and promotes best practices, knowledge, and pragmatic leading-edge solutions in the area of SOA. The COE introduces rigor and discipline across various SOA initiatives and provides benefits by building skills and competency to sustain successful execution of increasingly complex SOA initiatives. SOA is an approach to building applications that align business and IT goals. Typically, the business side of the organization likes the concept of SOA because SOA promotes business flexibility and agility. An ability to quickly react to changing market conditions or competition drives better return on investment. An ability to bring new products to market quickly is important for business executives; therefore, the ability of the IT organization to quickly ramp up supporting processes and applications is a key factor. The IT side of the organization likes SOA because it promotes loosely coupled, open standards-based architecture design principles. Better design principles and component reuse promotes operational speed and efficiency and cost savings.
In keeping with the proliferation of free software development initiatives and the increased interest in the business process management domain, many open source workflow and business process management systems have appeared during the last few years and are now under active development. This upsurge gives rise to two important questions: what are the capabilities of these systems? and how do they compare to each other and to their closed source counterparts? i.e. in other words what is the state-of-the-art in the area?. To gain an insight into the area, we have conducted an in-depth analysis of three of the major open source workflow management systems - jBPM, OpenWFE and Enhydra Shark, the results of which are reported here. This analysis is based on the workflow patterns framework and provides a continuation of the series of evaluations performed using the same framework on closed source systems, business process modeling languages and web-service composition standards. The results from evaluations of the three open source systems are compared with each other and also with the results from evaluations of three representative closed source systems - Staffware, WebSphere MQ and Oracle BPEL PM, documented in earlier works. The overall conclusion is that open source systems are targetted more toward developers rather than business analysts. They generally provide less support for the patterns than closed source systems, particularly with respect to the resource perspective which describes the various ways in which work is distributed amongst business users and managed through to completion.
Three Silverlight-Java interoperability scenarios: SOAP web service, REST web service and Syndication (RSS) feed service are reviewed. The SOAP web service and REST web service are created using tools currently available in NetBeans. A review of each interoperability scenario, along with demonstration code, includes some thoughts on where the interoperability scenario may be best used. Note that Silverlight also works with sockets, a more complex, less common interoperability scenario, which may be the subject of a future paper. The paper concludes with a review of Silverlight- Java interoperability for Silverlight 2 Beta 2 as well as some architectural guidance.
